We Have a New KORD Champion...Sammymorb

It was a great field last night with some new players as well as some veterans. In the end Waffles was knocked out by matty821 and picked a BTN t-shirt for his bounty. I suggested the waffles thong but he felt it wasn't really his style.

I didn't get many screen shots tonight but I did get a shot of the final table.


We got to the final table with 2 BTN writers at the final table with surf coming up a little short of the cash in 5th place. The bubble boy was matty821 who played well but came up a short in the end. In third place was pokerenthusiast. Yes I worked hard and got very lucky...and saved surflexus a lot of money by beating much of the field. Bayne_s battled for 2nd place and was awarded the $5 bounty...this was baynes_s 2nd cash in the KORD. And the winner is sammymorb. He knocked me out and got the $5 bounty so he hit it big with my knockout.

I played the $5 Razz tourney on FT the other night. It was the first time I had done it in a long time and I now remember why. An example of how my night went...I have 2468 showing my opponent has 39TJ showing. I bet he calls. Now the fact that I have two pair at the time doesn't really matter because a normal play will realize that even if I paired twice I need any card T or lower that doesn't pair to give me the win. He calls me down and actually wins with a made J.

I love razz.

The New KORD...The Anti-Waffles

Well, after a long time away, the KORD has returned. It is the Anti-Waffles except that would mean that waffles is a stud but we know that he isn’t. He just plays a lot of stud. Anyway, it will be June 6th at 9:15 central time. It is an $8 buy-in and will have a 50/50 bounty. It should be a lot of fun. The password is pokere.

Something New at Brickin The Nutz

The management of Brickin The Nutz has come up with a new idea. Sitting around the Razz table the other day we thought that creating our own clothing line might be a good thing so we have opened a store front called BTN Apparel. We have various items for sale including a waffles thong and the prices are low just for you. I don’t have the Brickin The Nutz stuff ready yet because some work is being done on a logo but it will be out shortly. We will also have KORD apparel for the Razz Enthusiast so take a look around and see if there is something you like.

Getting Back to the Game

It has been a while for me. Life interrupted for a while but I should be able to get back into this again. For those of you waiting on word about the next KORD, I will post something later this week.

So after staying away for a while I played the 2K on Full Tilt the other night. Over all it was an uneventful night. Some hands held up and other flamed out. Kings made calls they shouldn’t and nut draws bricked. Through it all I had a bad player at my table that kept me in the game. I won about 3K chips from him alone. Anyway, I kept a slow climb going until going a little card dead near the end. I had to start stealing to stay alive and it worked. On the final table bubble I worked hard to stay alive. I needed one hand to get me over the edge but it never came as I ended the night in 9th place.

As far as cash goes, I played last night and had a solid night. I finished up a buy in and could have been up another $30 if not for a runner runner suckout. I used some new ideas that Jude talked to me about from the book Razz Poker To Win by Mitchell Cogert. I won’t give you the details because you should read the book. The process he discusses isn’t much different then what I use but helps define how you play. Check it out if you like to play razz.

Sirfwalgman is the New KORD

It pains me in ways you can only imagine but not truly empathize with. Sirfwalgman took down the KORD last night in a way that only a true luckbox can do it. His massacre of the field was an endless attack of aggressive Razz with timely cards to run over the helpless rivals for this cherished crown.

In 2nd place was valgon, the past champion, who made a nice come back after having a short stack on the bubble. Taking the last paying spot was Numbono who was beat horrifically by waffles after moving into a sold 2nd place with his aggressive play. Evy was the bubble girl as she fought hard to maintain position but ran into a run of bad cards at the wrong time.

Thanks go to IT for firing up IT radio with special thanks going to buddydank for allowing us to have the show. It was fun to sit with IT and Zeem and discuss the hands as they played out. We will be trying this again hopefully for the next KORD so stay tuned for more information.

I'll have some screen shots either later today or this weekend and a breakdown of the top 10 finishers.

I didn't get very deep as I suffered from card death in combination with over confidence. As we moved later in the tournament I had a short stack and saw waffles complete a bet. bertgwen raised and I was looking at a fairly strong hand considering my short stack. It was nice catching a hand like this instead of bricking for a change. I'm not sure what hand either of them thought they could beat but I have seen some crazy aggression at these 3/6 tables.

Play The KORD...A Little Money Added

I almost forgot to get the KORD started for this month. It is the same structure as normal with a $7 + .70 buy-in and will continue to have the $2 bounty. I’ve added a little something to the prize pool because I can. I won a last short bet the other night for $25 and thought it would be nice to give this free money away. For a little added fun, Instant Tragedy will be broadcasting the event on IT Radio brought to you by BDR. I will be on live with him giving the play by play. Volgon...The New KORD Champion

Well, other then having the time messed up last night, it was a nice tournament. 21 players showed up for a night of masochistic enjoyment and we all got what we asked for. In the end, Volgon out dueled Surflexus to become the KORD champion this month. Instant Tragedy ended the night in 3rd place while TCGRO was the bubble boy. I want to thank everyone for playing and I truly think we would have a better turn out if I hadn’t messed up the time. Being that this is the first tourney of the year, the writers at BTN are tied with the field at $52.50. with the 2nd and 3rd place finishers being on the writing staff. Playing the KORD, an Interesting Post and a Hand

I read an interesting post over at highonpoker that got me thinking a little bit about the skills involved in Razz. One of the comments that Jordan made was that Razz isn’t really a tournament game and that the variance involved makes it difficult to be profitable. He also talked about Razz cash games being where the money should be made because solid decision making will earn you a profit over time. And finally he said that the skills needed for Razz are not as deep as the skills needed for other forms of poker.

For the most part, I agree with what he says. I think Cash games can be exploited…especially at the lower levels and I do agree that some of the skills needed for Razz pale in comparison to other games. But I do think that you can earn a profit playing Razz tourneys. The key is, and I’ve written about it before, is identifying specific players and using there flaws to get you in position for success. Yes, when you get deep, everyone is at a critical point in the tourney and one mistake leaves you out of the money. And yes, you don’t have as much control over your destiny but it is about making the right decisions. I’ve done ok in tourneys but maybe it is just variance hitting me for an extended period of time.

I guess the real point is that we should all play the games that give up the best return. Razz just seems to be one of the games that I do well in and because I am more of a tourney player then a cash game player, I have only one side of the argument that I can comment on. I have started playing more cash games and intend to continue to work on that part of my Razz game.

Now, I have an interesting hand from last nights $5 Razz tourney on Full Tilt. It involved me with a great starting hand and possibly not getting away from a hand that I should have folded.

I really don’t like this but I have to think he has paired at least. It is also possible my draw to the 7 is better. As you can see by the time bank I gave this some thought. There was a hand earlier in the night that actually gave me the courage to call here. Yancy and I were involved in a hand where I had 34 showing on 4th and he had 45 and he folded to my bet. Now he could have folded a brick or he might have been folding with a high card behind. This was what caused me to stay in the hand.

You can see that I’m still worried and the passive way I played this hand show the weakness I was feeling and that I was worried he would draw out if he had paired. If I really like my hand I should have re-raised for more information. He actually did a great job of applying pressure.

Now I got lucky that he didn’t actually have a hand behind. I think he did a good job of keeping the pressure on me. This is a donkish play most of the time and it show how vulnerable I was to my ego and reads from previous plays. I actually made the decision to suck out on yancyonce when we got to 6th street because I thought my draw to the 7 was ahead of his holdings and I hand already committed to much money to the pot on a hand that didn’t look good. Sometimes the cards just fall right.

A Good Tourney Night, Razz Cash and the Kord on Friday

I had a solid night on the Razz tourney tables last night. The highlight was taking 2nd in the $5 tourney but bubbling the 2K hurt a little. This is the 2nd time in a week or so I've done that. Anyway, I had this hand that I really think I screwed the pooch on. Take a look.

The 6 bricked but I think he has a pair and maybe a 9 behind. It turns out he had the 9 but didn't pair. He has a great draw and the lead. My thought was fold or put him in. I chose not to fold and got for the knockout. I still had a smallish stack if I lose but in hindsight a fold was a better choice because he didn't pair like I thought. What is the right play.

I actually improve but not enough and lose the hand. With 20 players left and 12 getting paid the best line may have been to fold on 5th street.

The KORD Razz Tourney and a Hand Question

Friday night is the KORD, a Razz tourney that I am reunning at regular times. This months version is called SLB's Umbilical KORD named after last months winner. He put a bounty on his head for a buy-in if I remember right and there will be a random bounty placed on another player yet to be determined. The tourney takes place on Full Tilt on Friday the 18th at 9:00 central time with a buy-in of 7.70. It is a knockout tourney with $2 being the bounty on each player. The winner will also get a banner created in their honor placed on Brickin The Nutz so come one and all and enjoy the fun. The password is "pokere".

Last night was the Skills game and I had an interesting hand that I wanted to ask about. I had a solid chip stack at the time and was involved a questionable hand.

I took my time making this call. This player has shown the ability to play aggressive with high cards back so I float a bet. Should I have raised to try and push the T out?

This was my quandry. I actually think that I'm ahead here. I know I'm ahead of the ten but he has a nut type draw. I also think that I'm ahead of the player with the 8. I took my time calling the first bet but when the other player reraised I may have made a mistake by folding. My mistake could have been calling the original bet. I'm not sure on this except that I wavered and folded with Probably the best hand but a lesser draw.

Who knows if my hand would have held up but it might have been time to go with it.

There is a Hole in the Dike (PE)

So after running good for a few days, I was smacked in the face with bricks. I knew it was due so I took my lumps and started a new tourney shortly before being eliminated. I honetly bricked every hand except two and in the two I won, my opponent dropped out quickly. I even tried to give him a chance to catch up but he bricked again. Nothing more to say about that.

I have identified a leak. It is not a good one to have either. I have noticed a large amount of bubble area bust-outs and realized that I am maning up to much at this time. I don't want to play passive if I have the chance to gain chips so I have been going stupid aggressive trying to show no fear. Stupidity seems to be my strong suit at times. Anyway, It cost me a chance at a nice score in the 2K so if I don't plug the leak, I will be in trouble.

I think this has come from trying to be more agrressive near the bubble. I've been trying to gain chips during this part of tourneys and don't like it when players play back. For the most part I have had great starting hands that bricked and need to throw them away to fight another day but can't seem to find the fold button. When I do find the fold button I run deep. The key to my game is patient aggression and playing like a maniac won't get it done.
