5 Buck Razz Final Table Epiphany (Jude)

I'm still playing the nightly $5.50 on Full Tilt whenever I get the chance, although not many others are. The numbers have dropped by more than half for this mtt. Did everyone move up at the same time and leave me behind or what??

Since I feel that I still don't have enough experience (or the bankroll for that matter) to move up to the $26 on a regular basis, I'm still swimming with the fishies in this one. There is a $10 one twice a day at odd hours, mid afternoon and late night, that I've made a couple of attempts to play, but wasn't able to cash or get anywhere near cashing the 2 times I tried it. I'll continue to give those a try on an infrequent basis, though.

So last night, I managed a 3/41 finish, which is odd, because I was down to 32 of 34 players at one point. Bricks and bring-ins were hitting me really hard in the early levels and out of frustration, I decided to just give the small remainder of my chips up and call it a night. To my surprise, I won that hand and doubled up. Then a little later, I won a 2600 pot with a J low. A J low! I made the correct read on him and just like that, I was back in the game. Although I wasn't having the best of luck, I never fell out of the top ten after that and went to the final table 5th in chips.

Of course, I played my usual passive final table game, as only 5 of the 8 would cash. For some reason I go into Super Fold Mode before the bubble. 67(8) against a raising 3? Fold it. A2(8) against a raised 4? Fold it! (Epiphany part) I know it's a leak and I know that's the reason why I can sometimes sneak into these 3rd place finishes, but I also know it's the reason I can't seem to win one of these things. I tell myself that I'm avoiding traps and those 'set up hands', but what I'm really doing is costing myself the chips I need to take one down. So.......that's what I will be thinking the next time I am nearing a final table; up the aggression to get into a winning position. A little experiment. I'll let you know how it goes. :)

Playing Razz Skillz

I played the blogger Skillz game last night and as it was Razz I thought I would talk a little about it.

It didn’t start well as I slowly chipped down and hit a lot of bricks. I was down to about 2.1K when I finally won a solid pot.

I make my 7 but change has a better 7…I may or may not have been behind the whole time. And Loretta hits to take the other pot as well. I was right vs one player but maybe not the other.

This was all but the end of my night. I actually got some chips back with my luckbox skills that I borrowed from surflexus but they were not enough and I went out in 24th place.

Not sure if the big losing hand was played right or not. It was hard to get away from all those chips.

Getting Back to the Game

It has been a while for me. Life interrupted for a while but I should be able to get back into this again. For those of you waiting on word about the next KORD, I will post something later this week.

So after staying away for a while I played the 2K on Full Tilt the other night. Over all it was an uneventful night. Some hands held up and other flamed out. Kings made calls they shouldn’t and nut draws bricked. Through it all I had a bad player at my table that kept me in the game. I won about 3K chips from him alone. Anyway, I kept a slow climb going until going a little card dead near the end. I had to start stealing to stay alive and it worked. On the final table bubble I worked hard to stay alive. I needed one hand to get me over the edge but it never came as I ended the night in 9th place.

As far as cash goes, I played last night and had a solid night. I finished up a buy in and could have been up another $30 if not for a runner runner suckout. I used some new ideas that Jude talked to me about from the book Razz Poker To Win by Mitchell Cogert. I won’t give you the details because you should read the book. The process he discusses isn’t much different then what I use but helps define how you play. Check it out if you like to play razz.

Razz 2/4 - Surflexus Style

I decided to play a little 2/4 Razz last night and had some pretty good results. I play a rather unorthodox game at times so put on your seat belt. :)
We'll call this Hand 1 ( for reference purposes if you want to comment about it )
PokerStars Game #16544228054: Razz Limit ($2/$4) - 2008/04/06 - 22:40:25 (ET)Table 'Modestia V' 8-max

Seat 3: PokerMedo ($49.50 in chips)
Seat 4: surflexus ($118.25 in chips)
Seat 5: KyRice ($24.75 in chips)
Seat 6: maat ($35.50 in chips)
Seat 7: AceTo5 ($179.50 in chips)
Seat 8: K McClayton ($77.50 in chips)
Just to condense this down I'm editing the antes from the hand histories.
I sat down with $120 and this is our first good starting hand.

A nice little start. I got a little lucky but I think I had a good enough hand to call down his bets. Let me know if you think I should have played it differently. I'm posting these hands to hopefully get some constructive feedback.

This one worked out OK but I think maybe I should have completed it on 3rd to get the bring in out of the hand. I'm still fairly new to the table so I'm still trying to be a little cautious and I really don't want PokerMedo 3 betting it on 3rd so I decided to just call.

Razz Book Review: Play Razz Poker to Win by Mitchell Cogert

Finally, I have a minute to post about the book that I've been reading, Play Razz Poker to Win by Mitchell Cogert.

No matter which form of poker you're playing, it all comes down to starting hand selection. This is (or should be!) the core of your game and Cogert gives excellent advice in this area with a well thought out Points System. It's an easy 5 step system that will help you decide whether you should play that A 7 (8) you've been dealt or actually (gasp!) fold it. I think the system is great for beginners, as it takes away all of the 'guess work' for you and helps you make those borderline decisions a lot easier.

Of course, you can't always wait for a great 3 card low, just as you can't always wait for Aces and Kings in NLH, and Cogert gives great advice on the subject of well timed stealing with the use of position, up cards and the reads of others.

His advice for defending your bring-in bet was very good (I'm guilty of this also from time to time) with a simple Two-Level Rule, which also applies to 4th street play.

I think 4th street is where things can get sticky for a lot of players, myself included. Cogert gives many examples, scenarios and odds for play on this street. Being aware of the proper odds for drawing vs. folding on 4th is key in this game. His catch-line is Don't be the Azz in Razz!

There's even a section of hand histories from an actual Full Tilt session for all the hand history buffs out there where you can follow along as he plays a 5/10 cash game.

Then there's the section in the back on odds of made 9s vs draws, which I thought was very informative.

All in all, I thought it was a very well written book on Razz and I would recommend it for beginners, as well as intermediate players, especially for the Starting Hand Points System.

So, if you're getting bored with NLH (and who doesn't, eventually??) and want to learn a new game or if you just want to be better at the R in HORSE, give this book a read and you will no longer be the Azz in Razz. :)
